THE ROLES OF NURSE INFORMATICISTS

The Roles of Nurse Informaticists
Just as the Internet and other technological innovations have radically changed the world, the constant evolution of informatics continues to transform nursing and health care. The nurse is at the forefront of this transformation, serving as a knowledgeable leader in system development, implementation, and management. As new technologies become integrated into health care settings, the nurse informaticist areas will continue to become more critical.
For this Discussion, you examine the informatics areas that have evolved to facilitate this transformation. You consider different functional areas and responsibilities that nurse informaticists may fulfill and how they contribute to technological progress throughout the health care field.
Note: There are many different terms used to refer to “nurse informaticist,” including informatics nurse, nurse informatician, and informatics specialist. In this specialization, the term “nurse informaticist” is applied, adhering to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) terminology.
To prepare:
Review this week’s media presentation, The Role of Nurse Informaticists, reflecting on the impact that informaticists have on health care settings.
Using the American Medical Informatics Association web resource in this week’s Learning Resources, investigate the various working groups associated with nursing informatics.
Identify a nursing informatics role that is of particular interest to you. Conduct further research to find out how this specific role might contribute to patient safety, quality of care, nurse efficiency, the implementation of new informatics initiatives, and/or electronic health records.
By Day 3
Post a description of a nursing informatics role that that is of interest to you and why. In your posting, explain how the nurse informaticist in this role impacts one or more of the following: patient safety, quality of care, nurse efficiency, the implementation of new informatics initiatives, and/or electronic health records. Justify your reasoning by citing authentic examples and references to the research literature.
Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.
By Day 6
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days using one or more of the following approaches:
Ask a probing question, substantiated with additional background information, evidence or research.
Validate an idea with your own experience and additional research.
Expand on your colleagues’ postings by providing additional insights or contrasting perspectives based on readings and evidence.

ANALYZE THE RISE OF CIVILIZATION IN THE AMERICAS, MESOPOTAMIA, EGYPT, CHINA AND INDIA, AND HEBREW AND IRANIAN CIVILIZATION IN THE PERIOD 3500 BCE TO 1000CE.

Patterns of World History Volume 1 to 1600

Authers:Von Sivers, Desnoyes & Stow

Analyze the rise of civilization in the Americas, Mesopotamia, Egypt, China and India, and Hebrew and Iranian civilization in the period 3500 BCE to 1000CE. Briefly, explain their histories, contributions and why the civilization declined.

Essay Format:

Your essay must be at least 2000 (minimum) words in length. Do not use direct quotes. Paraphrase and cite your sources. The easiest way to cite sources is to use parenthetical citations (MLA) that include the author’s last name and page number (Mayer 199). No outside sources, cite only from the required textbook and the lectures. You need citations in every paragraph except for your intro and conclusion.

Your first paragraph must contain a series of arguments that you intend to historically prove in the text of your essay. Never pose rhetorical questions in your essay. Rhetorical questions are cheap literary devices that make your writing style non-assertive and give the reader the impression that you are not in control of your essay or the material. Immediately give the reader your overall argument, and then, in succeeding sentences of your first paragraph list supporting arguments in chronological order. The supporting arguments should be chronological in order and build on each other. Your last paragraph is the conclusion and here you restate your original thesis, succinctly summarize what you covered in the text of your paper and conclude. In your conclusion do not editorialize or introduce anything new that you did not cover in the body of the essay.

The topic sentences of your paragraphs must do more than simply describe what the paragraph is about, they must also state why the paragraph is important to the overall argument of your essay. In other words, the topic sentence summarizes the paragraph, but also links it back to one of the supporting arguments that you listed in your introductory paragraph. You must have dates or at least periodize in almost every paragraph. Paragraphs should be one-third to one-half page in length. Finally, your essay must have a conclusion that restates your original argument in light of the data and facts that were discussed in the text of your essay. A paragraph is at least four sentences long.

To obtain an optimal grade your essay must be clearly written. Clarity of style, proper grammar, spelling, analytical organization and logical coherence are essential if you wish to receive a passing grade. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TURN IN A FIRST DRAFT as your finished essay. A decent paper will go through at least three rewrites. Therefore revision, rewrite, revision, rewrite, etc., is the process that will earn you a good grade. FINALLY, BE SURE THAT YOU START ON THIS PAPER IMMEDIATELY. For your draft that you send me, be sure it is the best you can do. Drafts are optional, but I will read and comment on only one draft so send be your best effort. NO DIRECT QUOTES. PARAPHASE ONLY.

HE EFFECTS OF “TO ERR IS HUMAN” IN NURSING PRACTICE

The Effects of “To Err Is Human” in Nursing Practice
The 1999 landmark study titled “To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System” highlighted the unacceptably high incidence of U.S. medical errors and put forth recommendations to improve patient safety. Since its publication, the recommendations in “To Err Is Human’” have guided significant changes in nursing practice in the United States.

In this Discussion, you will review these recommendations and consider the role of health information technology in helping address concerns presented in the report.

To prepare:

Review the summary of “To Err Is Human” presented in the Plawecki and Amrhein article found in this week’s Learning Resources.
Consider the following statement:
“The most significant barrier to improving patient safety identified in “To Err Is Human”is a “lack of awareness of the extent to which errors occur daily in all health care settings and organizations (Wakefield, 2008).”
Review “The Quality Chasm Series: Implications for Nursing” focusing on Table 3: “Simple Rules for the 21st Century Health Care System.” Consider your current organization or one with which you are familiar. Reflect on one of the rules where the “current rule” is still in operation in the organization and consider another instance in which the organization has effectively transitioned to the new rule.

400 words
Response to Discussion –
You are meeting a friend for coffee at your local Barnes and Noble. This friend is skeptical about Christianity and the Bible. During the course of the conversation your friend says, “The Bible is really just a bunch of stories that are designed to help people cope with life in the real world. They give you something to do so that you feel better about your place in this crazy world.” Based on the material from Chapters 1–5 in Everyday Bible Study (both text and videos), how would you respond to your friend? Remember to you support your answer using material from Everyday Bible Study and the Scriptures. You may find the material in Chapters 1 and 5 most helpful for creating your response.

Thread must demonstrate an excellent understanding of the Everyday Bible Study text and clearly answer the prompt you selected. Your thread must be well supported with material from Everyday Bible Study text. This material must be properly cited. You can do this simply by including something like the following after your quoted material: (Cartwright & Hulshof, p. 23). Citing specific Scriptures may also be beneficial in supporting your thoughts and ideas. You can cite Scripture by noting the passage and translation after the quoted text (John 3:16-17, NLT).

Discussion: Introduction to the Planning Process
The nursing process provides a cornerstone for care. Engaging in assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation helps to move the patient from his or her current state toward a desired outcome. How does this correlate with the strategic planning process?
In this Discussion, you examine similarities and differences between the nursing process and strategic planning. You also consider why it is important for a nurse leader-manager to be familiar with the planning hierarchy and to apply business principles to promote strategic change at the organizational or systems level.
To prepare:
Review the information related to the nursing process and the strategic planning process addressed in Chapter 4 of the Sare and Ogilvie text and the other Learning Resources. Think about how the nursing process is similar to and different from the strategic planning process.
Reflect on the value of nurse leader-managers’ contributions to strategic planning, as discussed by Dr. Huston in this week’s media.
Using the Walden library, identify an example from the literature that demonstrates why it is beneficial for nurse leader-managers to be familiar with the planning hierarchy and why they should be engaged in strategic planning in addition to and in contrast with operational planning.

By Day 3
Post an explanation of how you view the similarities and differences between the nursing process and the strategic planning process. Share an example from the literature that demonstrates why it is beneficial for nurse leader-managers to be aware of the planning hierarchy and why they should be engaged in strategic planning in addition to and in contrast with operational planning.

IMPACT OF MAINSTREAM FOCUS ON PSYCHOPATHOLOGY AND DIAGNOSIS

Impact of Mainstream Focus on Psychopathology and Diagnosis
Diagnosis and the description of mental health issues have recently become ubiquitous in the media. One of the reasons for this new emergence of the topic of mental health in the mainstream media is because of worldwide traumatic events. Many tragic events covered in the media are centered on one or two individuals who have committed acts of violence. Unfortunately, most of these individuals have had a history of mental illness. This aspect of the tragedy then becomes the focus of analysis within the media. From this point of reference, reporters and journalists educate the public on mental health issues. However, these tragedies could be an opportunity to educate the public about the facts related to mental illness. Unfortunately, the media discussions about mental illness often result in attaching a stigma to mental illness and to the population suffering from mental illness.

As a clinical social worker, you need to be aware of the impact of the entry of psychopathology and diagnosis in mainstream public discourses. You also need to think about how the media could help eliminate or mitigate the stigma attached to mental illness in the mind of the general population.

· Post an explanation of your thoughts on how psychopathology and diagnosis have entered mainstream public discourse.

· Then explain the potential negative and positive impact of this mainstream discourse on those living with a psychiatric diagnosis.

· Briefly explain the DSM-5’s organization and its dimensional approach to diagnosing and its possible impact on society’s view of mental disorders.

· Be sure to include specific examples to the mainstream media (e.g., television or magazine reports, television shows) in your post.

Support your post with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.
