In order to provide the appropriate intervention, social workers first need to have conducted a thorough assessment. Having a comprehensive understanding of a client and their social environment, including the influence of racism and ethnocentrism, allows a social worker to accurately identify the presenting problems and help the client develop goals to address their needs. Not completing a full assessment may result in inaccurately identifying the presenting problem and pushing goals on the client to which they do not agree. A good assessment is the best foundation for treatment planning.
In addition, evidence based practice requires social workers to use the best available evidence to inform their practice decisions. This assignment helps you prepare for the final project by beginning to identify the presenting problem and possible goals, as well as beginning the research process to inform your treatment recommendations when working with the identified client in a case study.
CASE STUDY: JUAN AND ELENA
Submit a 3 pages paper in which you:
Identify the case you will be using for the final project
Describe the presenting problem(s)
Describe 2 goals for the client based on their presenting problem
Identify a specific peer-reviewed article and explain how it could inform understanding of the problem/population, development of goals, or intervention and treatment plan
Explain how ethnocentrism and racism may influence the case (make sure to draw from this week’s assigned readings)

For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources. Select either the course-specific case study for John or Debra and consider how the social worker applied the GIM in the case study. Also, think about any cultural competence techniques the social worker might have explicitly or implicitly used in the case. Then reflect on why working collaboratively with that client is vital to the treatment planning process. Then, select three of the eight planning steps discussed in the course text and think about how you might utilize those planning steps to foster empowerment during that process. Finally, reflect on the skills you might use to ensure the treatment planning process is mutually agreed upon by you and the client and consider how the treatment planning process affects implementation of treatment.
Post a description of how the social worker in the course-specific case study you selected applied the GIM. Include in your post an explanation of any cultural competence techniques the social worker might have explicitly or implicitly used in the case. Explain why working collaboratively with the client is vital to the treatment planning process. Then, describe the three planning steps you selected and explain how you might utilize those planning steps to foster empowerment during that process. Finally, explain one practice behavior skill you might use to ensure the treatment planning process is mutually agreed upon for you and the client and further explain how use of that skill might affect implementation of treatment.

Learning Activity 1: Research-Based Needs AssessmentThis assignment looks at the needs of a Human Services issue that you find important. The needs analysis will allow you to begin working and researching an issue that a Human Services professional can improve.Tasks:Identify and research a specific Human Services issue of personal interest. Conduct a thorough needs analysis for the problem using application of theory and research. Make sure to include the following in your needs analysis:Create a 3 page report on the needs analysis in proper APA format. The report should demonstrate mastery of the program outcomes of Theoretical Application (PO 1), Research (PO 3), Multicultural Sensitivity (PO 5), and Professional Ethics (PO 6).This needs analysis will serve as a topic approval for M4 Assignment 2 LASA. When the needs analysis is graded, the instructor will also determine if this topic is satisfactory for the needs assessment in the LASA. If not, the instructor will work with you to determine a satisfactory topic.
